Two bedrooms on the east side of the house feature folding La Cantina doors that open on to a private gravel seating area, and the backyard. Concrete steps lead to the redwood deck that spans the length of the house.

The owners chose to update the cabinetry in the kitchen with fresh dark paint and silver knobs, a nice contrast to the light colored floors. They kept details like the scalloped molding as an homage to the 1951 architecture, but gave the space a fresh aesthetic with custom paint and brand new walnut counter tops in a herringbone pattern.

The owners spent two years collecting new and vintage furniture to decorate their home, maintaining a warm mid-century vibe throughout the house. The original hard wood floors were refinished and a few woven rugs from Asia and the Middle East were scattered throughout the house

The custom walnut dining room table can seat 14 comfortably, in a unique five-sided shape with black metal legs, to maximize the use of space in a narrow dining room. Banquette seating, with upholstered seat cushions, lines two sides of the table while Eames mid-century chairs in black fiberglass with black wire legs, matching the table legs, provide additional seating.

Art from the owners’ personal collection and a few pieces picked up at flea markets around the world make for a nice salon-style wall in the living room, and can be found throughout the house.

A wood burning fireplace in the Living Room is original to the house, but the stone was cleaned, the walls freshly painted and an art deco painting from the owners’ collection was hung above it. Hidden in the ceiling above this painting is a silver screen for movies and television viewing.

The main entry door is painted red with a frosted glass insert and guests are welcomed into a space featuring this modern table and a lava glazed table lamp, purchased on eBay. It’s this mixture of vintage and new pieces that make this 1951-built home feel updated and inviting.

A wrought iron banister in a mid-century geometric design, and powder coated black, complements the only steps in the house. Though the house is actually on one level, the elevations of the property allowed for this detail.

The corner of the master bedroom clearly shows the uplighting detail from the home’s original design, and features an original Jurgen Peters painting.

A brand new full modern bathroom with a floating glass wall can be found just off the two bedrooms-side of the house. This bathroom was designed to be accessible to the backyard, so a glass door to the outside was put in and the entire room was tiled using unglazed hexagon floor tiles, white subway tiles on three walls, and a single putty-colored accent wall.

The white subway tiles of a bathroom meant to be accessible to the backyard were playfully adorned with colored metal hooks that break up the color scheme. Colored towels also accomplish this.

A guest bathroom’s original vanity was updated with fresh paint and new hardware.

Visitors step out of the house onto a newly constructed red wood deck that runs the entire length of the main rooms and includes a private Northern Lights Cedar Tubs Japanese-style cedar soaking tub, surrounded by bamboo.

A modern designed 9 foot island was built around original exposed support timbers in their natural color.

Built in 1907 as a timber factory, the iconic Allied Box Factory eventually evolved into creative live work lofts. This 2 bedroom, 3 bath loft was completely renovated, staying true to the origins of the building while creating a modern living space. Kitchen and living spaces were flipped from the original design moving bedrooms and bathrooms to the first floor and entertaining spaces upstairs.

Classic Calacatta marble countertops and full height backsplash (honed), a douglas fir plank ceiling, and floor to ceiling custom cabinetry by Gaos, inspire an open air, fresh and classic aesthetic. Solid brass accents the room with cabinet pulls, handles and focal light fixture. Floors are solid oak, recreated to match the original, including a border inlay. The kitchen island is made from 3" thick reclaimed Douglas fir. All appliances and hood are built-in, including the panel-ready Thermador refrigerator.

A classic, french La Cornue range in Provence Blue creates a culinary focus. The Newport Brass, Chesterfield, pot filler faucet fitting is the ultimate companion for cooking pasta or a clam boil. The built in hood and floor to ceiling custom cabinets from Gaos maximize storage and are set against countertops in reclaimed Douglas fir and Calacatta marble, as well as a full height Calacatta marble backsplash (honed).

The Franke fireclay white farmhouse sink and solid brass fittings from Newport Brass, Chesterfield (including kitchen faucet and pot filler over the range) inspire an authentic and efficient usage of the work space.

A crawl space under the existing home’s stairs was converted to a powder room on the main floor. The cedar wood lined walls and ceiling provide a nautical feel, completed by the solid Kingston Brass plumbing trim and a thoughtfully curated antique enamel bucket sink (Restored from readytore.com). The brass mirror was sourced from eBay and the rope mirror was purchased in Provincetown, MA. The solid brass light fixture is from Urban Electric and the wallpaper is from Cole & Sons.

The dining room was restored to its Victorian era splendor including custom wood panel wainscoting, and original cove ceilings. Focal lighting from Restoration Hardware and hand printed Printsburgh wallpaper complete the room.
